On a 240 with the turbo engines B19ET, B21ET and FT, the distributor cap and rotor arm are wear points that become brittle and develop burn marks on the contacts, while a tired ballast resistor can cause hard cold starting.

During an inspection it is worth checking the inside of the cap for cracks and carbon tracks, the contact surface of the arm, and that the anchorage screws and fasteners are seated correctly – play there causes an uneven rotor and irregular ignition. If the cap is replaced, it pays to look over the arm at the same time since they wear in step.
