Fitting
Profile D requires a skimmed cylinder head or a performance head to make room for the valve lift. Check this before ordering.
Always fit new tappets together with the camshaft. Use run-in paste on the lobes and tappets. A new camshaft run in against worn tappets is quickly damaged. The warranty therefore only applies when new tappets and run-in paste are bought and fitted at the same time.
Tighten the camshaft nut to 80 Nm with thread-locking compound.
Use an oil with zinc additive during running-in and in normal use. It protects the lobes and tappets against wear.
The camshaft is replaced with the engine left in the car. Remove the cylinder head, the timing cover, the timing gears and, on carburettor cars, the fuel pump. Inspect the valve springs, camshaft bearings and timing gear set while the engine is apart.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between profile D and the original camshaft?
Profile D is a mild performance profile with 10.8 mm valve lift and 280° duration. It was fitted as original in the B20E up to and including 1973 and gives more life in the mid-range and top end than a standard A or C cam.
Do I have to replace the tappets at the same time?
Yes. A new camshaft run in against worn tappets is quickly damaged. The warranty only applies when new tappets and run-in paste are fitted at the same time.
Does the engine need to be removed from the car?
No. The camshaft is replaced with the engine left in the car. The cylinder head, the timing cover, the timing gears and, on carburettor cars, the fuel pump are removed.
