Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal Elring – Volvo PV, Amazon, P1800, 140, 164, 240, 740, 760, 940

Rear radial shaft seal from Elring for the crankshaft, fitted on the clutch side. The seal seals the crankshaft against the rear crankshaft seal housing and prevents engine oil from leaking out towards the clutch.

When replacing the clutch, it is recommended to check the seal and replace it if necessary, as oil leakage can end up on the clutch plate.

Important for older Volvos

Older Volvo PV, Amazon, P1800, 140 and 164 may originally be fitted with a felt ring seal at the crankshaft. On these engines, this radial shaft seal only fits if the engine has already been converted for a radial shaft seal, or if the engine has the later version from the factory.

For engines that still have the older felt ring seal, a conversion kit is required to convert to a radial shaft seal.

Good to know

When the gearbox and clutch are removed, the rear crankshaft oil seal is easily accessible. It is therefore a good opportunity to replace an old or leaking seal at the same time as the clutch.

Also check the crankshaft sealing surface for wear or grooves before fitting the new seal.
