K camshaft B18/B20

The K profile was fitted as original in the B20F (fuel-injected engines with catalytic converter), but really comes into its own as a mild sports cam in engines with original carburettors – for example twin SU. It increases low-rpm torque and gives your Volvo more pulling power at everyday speeds, without requiring major engine work. Usually used with twin carburettors.

Important when fitting

Always fit new cam followers together with the camshaft, and lubricate camshaft and followers with running-in paste (molybdenum disulphide grease) before first start. A new camshaft run in against worn followers is quickly damaged – the warranty therefore applies only if new cam followers are purchased and fitted at the same time.

The camshaft nut is tightened to 80 Nm (8 kgm) and secured with a tab washer or thread locker (Loctite).

We also recommend an oil with a zinc additive during running-in and operation, which protects lobes and followers against wear – for example Kendall 20W50 or 10W40.

Consider adding

New cam followers and running-in paste are a requirement for the warranty. While the engine is apart, it is worth checking the valve springs, camshaft bearings and timing gear set as well.
