Felt seal for the rear axle on Volvo PV, Duett, Amazon and 1800. The seal is made from wool and is part of the rear wheel bearing assembly. Made in Sweden by CVR.

The main purpose of the felt seal is to protect the wheel bearing from dirt and act as a barrier at the rear axle brake backing plate.

Installation

Before installation, lightly lubricate the felt seal with clean rear axle oil (gear oil) or apply a small amount of grease. The felt should not be installed completely dry, and light lubrication also helps prevent it from absorbing water.

Since the seal is used at a slowly rotating wheel, it does not need to be soaked in oil in the same way as a felt seal used around a crankshaft. Do not over-lubricate, as the seal is located close to the brakes.

Clean the contact surface thoroughly before installation. The surface should be clean and free from rust, burrs and damage that could wear the felt material.

Good to know

Two felt seals are required per car, one on each side.

Felt seals used around fast-rotating parts, such as crankshafts, have different requirements and must be thoroughly oiled before starting the engine to prevent excessive friction and heat. For this rear axle wheel bearing seal, light and even lubrication is sufficient.
