12V 55A Alternator with Built-in Regulator – Volvo B18, B20, B30

12V 55A alternator with built-in voltage regulator for Volvo B18, B20 and B30 engines. Suitable as a replacement for an existing alternator and can also be used when converting from an older dynamo to an alternator.

Converting to an alternator provides better charging, especially at low engine speeds.

Important information about fitment and brackets

B20 engine:
The alternator does not fully clear the car's original bracket. The existing bracket must be modified or replaced with the curved alternator bracket 462743B.

Conversion from a dynamo:
The alternator fits engines with mounting points for an alternator, using a bolt at the front of the engine. Cars with the older dynamo mounting require alternator bracket 419598.

The 55A alternator is larger than the 33A version:
On some models, the old straight adjustment arm may touch the alternator housing. In this case, use the curved bracket 462743B and a slightly longer fan belt.

Installation and wiring

Disconnect the battery before starting work. Remove the old generator and its wiring. When converting from a dynamo, remove the external voltage regulator and its connections.

Install the new alternator and connect:

• B+ on the alternator: battery cable

• D+ on the alternator: charging warning light wire

• If an external regulator was previously fitted, connect the wire from its D+ terminal to D+ on the new alternator

• Connect the wire from the regulator's B+ terminal to B+ on the new alternator

• The DF and D- wires are not used with the new alternator

• If a separate earth cable is used, connect it to the alternator housing B-

Good to know

The charging warning light must be correctly connected to D+ for the alternator to receive excitation current and start charging.

Also check the fan belt alignment after installation. If necessary, washers can be placed between the alternator and mounting points so that the belt runs straight.

Tension the fan belt, reconnect the battery and start the engine. Check that the charging warning light goes out and that the alternator is charging correctly.
