Volvo PV/Duett Transmission/Rear suspension
A howling hypoid rear axle, a slipping clutch or knocking propshaft joints are the classic symptoms once the miles have piled up on a PV or Duett. Power runs from the engine through the gearbox and propshaft out to the rear axle, and every link in that chain has its own wear points – from the release bearing to the crown wheel and pinion.

The PV 444, PV 544 and Duett 445/210 were built with two different rear axles, ENV and Spicer, and the parts are not interchangeable. Check which axle your car has before ordering – compare with the pictures in John's tips at the top of the page.

How do I know if my PV has an ENV or Spicer rear axle?
The axles differ in the shape of the axle housing and differential cover. Compare your car with the pictures in John's tips at the top of the page, or contact us with your chassis number and we'll help.
What gets replaced in a clutch overhaul?
The clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing are normally replaced together. Check the master and slave cylinders and the flywheel face at the same time so you don't have to do the job twice.
Which gearbox is fitted to the PV and Duett?
Early 444s and 445s with the B4B and B16 have a three-speed box, while the 544 and 210 with the B18 got the four-speed M40. The parts differ, so start from engine and model year.
