An oil film around the valve cover or leakage along the sealing surfaces are classic wear points on the B14A engine (1414cc, 51 bhp with a single Zenith or 70 bhp in twin SU form). Dry, hardened gaskets lose their ability to stay sealed and should be checked when the engine is rebuilt or needs to be re-sealed. This group includes gaskets and the valve cover gasket that cover the sealing surfaces you often go in to address.

Since the B14A was fitted to the 444 for a short period (1955–1956), it is worth checking that the gasket matches that specific engine before installation – the dimensions and design of the sealing surfaces differ between the B-series variants. A new valve cover gasket at every disassembly is cheap insurance against future leaks.
