A droning, grinding noise from the rear that grows with speed and a noticeable play when you move the wheel at twelve and six o'clock – these are the classic signs of worn rear bearings. On the 220 with B18 and M30 rear axle the bearings sit close to the seal, so a leaking seal that flushes away the grease is a common underlying cause.
