Camshaft for Volvo B16

This camshaft has the original A profile, as fitted to the B16B with twin carburettors. It also works in the B16A. An obvious choice when you want to keep the engine's original character or replace a worn original camshaft.

Fitting

Always fit new cam followers together with the camshaft. Lubricate the lobes and followers with assembly paste before the first start. A new camshaft running against worn followers is quickly damaged, and the warranty only applies when new cam followers are fitted at the same time. Use oil with a zinc additive during running-in and in normal use, for example 20W50 or 10W40. Volvo once specified 13–15 kpm for the camshaft nut; never tighten beyond 80 Nm, or the thread may strip. Secure the nut with threadlocker. Check the camshaft bearings and valve springs while the engine is apart.

Does the camshaft also fit a B16A?

Yes. The camshaft has the B16B profile, but it can also be used in the B16A.

Do I have to replace the cam followers at the same time?

Yes. The cam followers must be replaced when the camshaft is replaced, and the lobes and followers must be lubricated with assembly paste before the first start.

How tight can the camshaft nut be torqued?

No more than 80 Nm. The older figure of 13–15 kpm is too high and can strip the thread. Secure the nut with threadlocker.
