Newly manufactured oil pans for Volvo B18, B20

Original number 418260 is the oil pan for the B18 and B20, from the PV to the 1975 model year 240, and here is what Volvo's own catalogues say about it.

The question: which oil pan fits my B18 or B20?

An oil pan looks like an oil pan, right up until you are lying under the car holding the wrong one. For the B18 and B20 the answer is usually simple: the original number is 418260, and it is the same pan from the PV to the first 240.

Here we go through what Volvo's parts catalogues say, which cars it covers and where people tend to go wrong.

What the catalogues say

We have been through the catalogues in our cross-check runs, where every plate is read three times independently. 418260 appears in eight catalogues and on 22 catalogue lines, always as the engine oil pan and always one per car.

PV544 and Duett with B18: position 25. Amazon: position 25 for the B18 and 23 for the B20. P1800: position 26 for the B18 and 23 for the B20. 140 series: position 22 in both the 1972 and 1973 catalogues. 240/260 from 1978: position 21, on the B20 plate.

The cars it covers

PV544 with B18 1962–65 and Duett P210 with B18 1962–68.

Amazon 120/130 with B18 1962–68 and B20 1969–70, and the Amazon estate 220 with B18 1962–68 and B20 1969.

P1800 with B18 1961–68 and B20 1969–72, and the 1800ES with B20 1972–73.

140 series with B18 1967–68 and B20 1968–74, and the 240 with B20, model year 1975.

Not the same pan as

The B19 and B21 in the 240 have their own oil pan, original number 1276121, and that is not the same part as 418260. The 240 that came with a B20 in 1975 does take 418260.

Search for oil pan and you may also find the automatic gearbox pan, for example 235857, 380716 and 1277798. Those sit under the gearbox, not the engine, and have nothing to do with 418260.

Common traps

Swapped engine. Plenty of Amazons and 140s have had a B20 put in place of their B18, and then the engine decides. You are in luck here: according to the catalogues, the B18 and B20 take the same pan. If the car has a red block such as a B21 or B230, it needs that engine's pan.

The 1975 240. That year had both the B20 and the B21, so do not go by model year alone. Check the engine type designation: the B20 takes 418260, the B21 does not.

The gasket gets forgotten. The pan seals against gasket 418262, which should be replaced every time the pan has been off. There is also a fitting kit for the B18/B20 oil pan.

What to do

Check the engine type designation, B18 or B20, on the block or the type plate. Then add the car in My garage and open the engine plate for your model under Exploded views. There you will see the oil pan and gasket in their positions.

Our tip: New gasket and clean sealing faces, and you are spared the oil stain on the garage floor.

How we know

The information comes from Volvo's own parts catalogues. In our cross-check runs every plate is read three times independently, and a detail only counts when the readings match the catalogue. The positions above are the catalogue's own numbers.

Something does not match your car? Write to us through the contact form and attach a photo of the pan or the engine type plate. We would rather correct one line too many than one too few.

Next step

Add your car in My garage and the parts are filtered to your model. More guides and projects are here in CVR Garage, and news under News from CVR.

We check it against Volvo's parts catalog and reply with the exact part.
