Front wheel brake Volvo PV 544 (B18) (1962-66)
Uneven braking at the front, noise when braking, or a brake drum worn oval – these are typical reasons to take apart the front axle drum brake on a B18-equipped 544 from 1962–66. When you go through the front brakes on these model years there are hydraulic drums, and wear often shows up first as play in the return springs and worn-down thrust pins.

With the drum off anyway, it pays to replace the return springs and spring washers at the same time, since tired springs keep the shoes from releasing cleanly and cause dragging brakes.
