A clogged air filter often causes a rich mixture, sooty spark plugs and sluggish throttle response – on a twin-carb B18B/D with twin SU carburettors it shows up quickly, since both carburettors draw air through the filter housing. Check that the wing nut thread matches (1/4-28 UNF occurs) and that the sealing face against the carburetor intake seals tightly, otherwise false air is drawn past the filter. Note which filter type your car has before ordering – early and late versions can differ.
