Volvo's parts catalogues show that the exhaust is rarely the same across a whole model range. Engine, body style, gearbox, steering side and market can each call for a different front pipe, silencer or tail pipe – and many parts changed at a specific chassis number.
So have the engine code, body style (saloon, estate or coupé), gearbox and chassis number to hand before you order. On later cars it also matters whether a catalytic converter is fitted. Compare the diameter and brackets of the old pipe with the new part.
Exhausts usually leak at the joints. Gaskets, clamps and rubber mountings age even when the pipes look sound, so it pays to renew them at the same time. When replacing a manifold or front pipe, have new nuts and gaskets ready.
